Full-time MBA

Business Lab

Interested in entrepreneurship? Always dreamed of starting a business? Just curious about the start-up world?

HKU’s Business Lab provides students with opportunities to explore the process of starting a business from scratch. Business Lab makes use of all of the knowledge and tools learned throughout the MBA programme, while equipping students with the skills and insights necessary to research target markets and industries, and to understand the process of turning an idea into a viable business. Students receive elective credit for the course, which is run like a lab, rather than a theory-based class.
The Business Lab:

● Provides HKU MBA students with the experience of an early-stage entrepreneur seeking initial investment

● Coaches students in the development of an effective go-to-market strategy

● Helps students to validate their business model using R&D plans and financial projections, with advice from industry professionals

● Encourages students to improve presentation and communication skills in a friendly and collaborative environment
Who is this class for?

Business Lab is for students with any product or business idea. Social ventures, life sciences and “hard tech” start-ups are all welcome. Students can join Business Lab in teams or come as individuals and look for co-founders.
This class mimics the intense environment of a start-up in many ways. The workload can be quite high and students are expected to commit to 100% attendance and to the pressures and demands of the real world in an early stage start-up. Students are also expected to fully and actively participate in class.

Session Dynamics

Business Lab Coordinator and Facilitator Pedro Eloy has designed the course around a sequence of topics delivered via case studies, often presented by guest lecturers and industry experts that highlight specific skills critical for would-be entrepreneurs.
Students deliver an initial presentation and in lieu of a final exam deliver business pitches in semi-finals and final competitions. A diploma of participation with a final grade is conferred upon all students and a jury awards prizes to the top projects and best pitches.

Guests speakers

Entrepreneurs, investors and business professionals with sector-specific experience offer a real-world perspective on student projects. Invited guest speakers act as both a ‘reality check’ and a source of potential networking opportunities for the student teams.
Entrepreneurs provide mentoring and advising while industry experts lead interactive and subject-specific sessions tackling branding, finance, market position and more.

A source of potential networking opportunities for the student teams.
